Succulent Wall Gorgeous and Green Events

Succulent Wall Gorgeous and Green Events

I was on my way to rendezvous with Guitar Fred, my fiance, when I walked by a cute store that beckoned to me with a wall of succulents. Yes, a wall. My jaw dropped and I wandered in and to the right, I saw a wall of jewel-toned vintage glass and plenty of fine white milk glass (which is what we’re using in our 10/10/10 wedding). I then realized that this was the new retail shop for Gorgeous and Green Events by Pilar Zuniga that I had heard about from fellow brides!

I have admired Pilar’s work from afar and I was excited to get up close and personal. Brides — if you’re looking to bring inspiration you see on Style Me Pretty or 100 Layer Cake to life, you must stop here. If you decide to DIY, you can purchase or rent pieces from Pilar. Or, just hire her! The following is my interview with Pilar.

Q. How did you get started?
A. I’ve always been crafty and creative and grew up doing floral design with my Aunt, but I really jumped in to wedding and event design with my own wedding. My husband and I wanted to plan a celebration that would be sustainable and not as polluting as most weddings and events. So, I did a lot of research and started to become my own green wedding expert. After helping a few friends, I decided to start a business.

Q. What do you love most about designing events? What inspires you?
A. I love being creative. A full day of work will go by and I won’t realize it, because I get to use my brain and make things with my hands, it’s what I love. I try to get inspired by the people I work with and their stories. Of course, I also get inspired by living things, plants, flowers, animals, the forest, etc. I also like most things vintage, so I’m partial to the 1940’s and 1960’s and everything kitchy about old eras, like Candy stores from Willy Wonka or Diamonds, Pearls and Silk and Black and White movies from Hollywood.

Q. Why should couples consider working with an event designer?
A. Because we usually have good ideas! And we can help you create the wedding of your dreams in your budget range. My area is green weddings and events, so I help make the event and decor sustainable as well as beautiful.

Q. What sets you apart?
A. First, the sustainability factor. I truly work to make all my floral designs and decor sustainable and eco-friendly, and I’ve learned a lot about being green so I can help folks stay green in other aspects of their event. Second, I try to work with just about every budget. I’m super transparent about costs and for folks on a budget, I try to work creatively and smart to help them get the look they are going for within the price range they can afford.

Q. What’s your favorite part of a wedding?
A. My favorite part of the wedding is the getting ready part. It’s so fun to watch people get their outfits on and get prepared for the big day. Everything starts to come together and there’s so much excitement in the air.

Q. What’s your favorite place to find unique or vintage pieces?
A. Well, I like visiting the Alameda Antiques fair, but prices can be a little high there. They do have some cool items. I also have some secret places around the Bay that I visit regularly to find vintage gems to stock in my store.

Q. What can’t you leave home without?
A. These days, my travel mug filled with tea. I need the caffeine in the morning and I have always love tea and the ceremony of making tea and sweetening it just right.

Q. Just for fun: what’s surprised you most about being married?
A. What’s surprised me most has been the level of support I’ve gotten from my husband, he truly is a life partner.

This past December, I met Quyen, a prospective client for my wedding coordination services. I clicked with Quyen straight-away over email and even more in person as we share a love for great design and DIY-ness.

Inspired by a 100 Layer Cake post, Quyen decided to make her own invitations using Amy Butler paper from Michael’s. I’m amazed with Quyen’s handiwork! She just started her blog for her April wedding, so if you’d like to learn how she designed and hand stitched her lovely invitations, be sure to visit Our Day in April.

My favorite full-length program — Swan Lake — just completed its run at San Francisco Ballet. Hence, today’s inspiration is Odile.

I’d like you to meet Elizabeth Hurley. No, not Hugh Grant’s ex. I’m talking about a talented San Francisco wedding photographer with an exquisite eye, organic and earthy style and easy on the budget (I couldn’t believe my eyes) without sacrificing quality!

I met Elizabeth (Beth) at a wedding fair at the Four Seasons a couple weeks ago. I was immediately impressed by her style: vintage wire baskets held 11×14 mats dedicated to three unique weddings and the tables were accented with branches and peonies. Beth was also very friendly and flipping through the photos, I sensed that her clients were relaxed and clearly felt comfortable with Beth’s direction.

Visit Beth’s blog for recent weddings and reviews, and her website to browse her photo galleries, including horses! She also shares with us some tidbits about herself as well as some great photos below:

1. Why did you decide to go into photography? What are you passionate about?
I have been a photographer since I can remember. I started out at 10 years old with a Kodak Disk Camera, which I used to document my very exciting life. I continued to study photography throughout High School and College and my camera just became an extension of the way that I viewed the world! So I am not so sure that I decided to go into photography, as much as photography became a part of me!

My wedding photography business was born of my passion for photography and the need to do something I love everyday! Needless to say, I am most passionate about taking pictures, of documenting the people and places that are part of my life. I consider myself to be a visual record keeper — archiving the extraordinary events that make up life. Simply said, my passion is for documenting people and their connections to the world!

2. How would you describe your style? What do you think sets you apart from other photographers?
Upon moving to California from the East Coast, I was privileged to work with one of the best commercial photographers in the country. This had a very significant influence on my style of photography. Ultimately, I seek to find what is beautiful, unique, meaningful and fun about each wedding day, and set my camera upon those moments. I think my style could be described as photojournalism, with an eye for what is beautiful and fun!

3. What is your favorite part of a wedding?
My favorite part of a wedding to photograph is the “getting ready” part! I love all of the excitement and energy! With this said, each part of the day has its own unique charm!

4. What has been your favorite wedding so far? What made it so special?
That is a really hard question to answer…I am usually quite taken with each wedding I photograph. It is what makes my photography special – and is reflected in the images I create! I kind-of fall in love with each wedding I am part of!

5. What would be your dream wedding to photograph?
All logistics: Entirely Outdoors, Summertime, 5pm Ceremony, Portraits of the family before the Ceremony, Portraits of the couple at sunset, Good Music (a band preferably), relaxed and fun, and the freedom to capture the event as it unfolds.

6. For fun: what’s your guilty pleasure?
Ummm…People Magazine (only in flight), 30 Rock and chocolate!

One of my passions is gardening and I love tea parties. But I don’t want the traditional English tea party you can have at ultra-girly tea parlors around the San Francisco Bay Area. Since most of my girl friends live in the area, I didn’t want to go very far for my bridal shower and unfortunately we all live in apartments or condos without gardens of our own. And there’s where Flora Grubb Gardens comes in. I’ve put in an inquiry to see if she’ll let my gals host an intimate bridal shower, and I’ll keep you posted. Here’s some photos that will show you why I’m digging Flora Grubb Gardens (pun intended).

About seven years ago, I used to work for the City of Berkeley and there, I met Hovey Lee, a jewelry designer now based in Los Angeles, CA. At the time, she was a research and information science manager. One day, I noticed a pair of pretty earrings on Hovey’s desk and she shared with me that she had launched her own jewelry line in 2002. Hovey later left the City Clerk to work for tech companies, all the while expanding her jewelry collection. I stayed in touch with her (and bought many earrings and a few necklaces!) as she began to showcase her jewelry at Feria Urbana and San Francisco boutiques. In 2005, she was featured in magazine Audrey and the chic get-it-now source DailyCandy.com. Hovey moved to Los Angeles a few years ago, and her eco-friendly designs have since been featured in In Style, Lucky and People magazines. I’m so proud of her and the success she’s enjoyed!

Now that I’ve bought my bridesmaid dresses (to get an idea, click here), I’m looking for affordable accessories to give my bridesmaids as gifts. Naturally, I’m looking to Hovey.  Here are some pieces I’m considering. What do you think? What are you considering giving to your bridesmaids?

My chi-corgi in formalwear

My chi-corgi in formalwear

Yes, my chi-corgi, Munch, owns a tuxedo. My fiance and are debating whether or not to include him in our ceremony. I rarely go anywhere without him (I even take him to my weekly tennis practices) and I would hate to leave him at home on our big day.

We adopted this 2-year old cutie from a rescue in May and although he knows a few commands, I don’t think we can successfully train him to sit and stay throughout the whole ceremony. When I see that other couples have incorporated their “best friends” in their vows (Green Wedding Shoes’ 2008 post), I wonder what happens when the ceremony is over. Who watches the dog throughout the rest of the night? I can imagine we’ll be too busy taking photos, hugging friends and family, and more to worry about my little Munch.

Do people quietly retire their dogs to a crate or back to the bridal suite? If you’re encountering this dilemma or have even resolved it, I’d love to hear from you. Thanks!

I already told our cake designer we were supplying a vintage white milk glass stand. Then I stumbled across Clara French’s beautiful site. Rental starts at $45 (having Clara make one starts at $198!) and you can have the stand for two weeks if out of state (Washington). Round-trip shipping is $48. If you’re on a budget or even live in Washington (where you can save on shipping by picking it up from their Seattle boutique), renting one of Clara’s cake stands is a good option!

We won custom design last July via a blog contest on Lollipop Events and Design and here’s the finished work! Vanessa designed the invites and I designed the guitar pick and envelopes myself. I just sent them off in the mail today! Yay!

My fiance (who I will now call Guitar Fred) and I met on an outing to Love Farms in Healdsburg, CA (Sonoma wine country) and I dreamt of getting married on a farm or ranch until I started shopping around (one place cost $85,000).

Three weeks into our engagement, we found the Christchurch’s Campbell Hall and Garden atop a hill overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the sleepy seaside town of Sausalito, CA. The Hall is not a very popular venue, compared to the oft-booked Sausalito Presbyterian Church, but we got it for a great price ($1,800 all day including BYO caterer, chairs and tables).

So here’s the plan:

  1. Take photos in downtown Sausalito by the San Francisco Bay and elephant statues
  2. Get married in the garden (the trees overhead will be a natural arch, from which I’ll hang CB2 hanging glass tealight holders)
  3. Hold the cocktail “carnival/fair” hour in the patio (kissing booth, photo booth, games)
  4. Boogie and feast in the reception hall (adorn the exposed wooden beams with paper lanterns or garlands)

What do you love most about the venue you’ve picked (or are looking at)? For me, it’s the stunning red doors at the Hall’s chapel across the street. (The photos below were taken with my cell phone, so I apologize for the quality.)
